MOTIVATION FOR PHILANTHROPY
Twenty two (22) years ago, the journey of my charitable works started in a most private manner: funds and materials used were purely supplied through my personal savings. It all began with a quarterly visit to just one of the Motherless Babies Homes in Lagos in March 2001 carrying with me some baby requirements. Every Christmas, I appreciated the staff with gifts as encouragement and thankfulness to God on their behalf. Later, some poor widows began to approach me with their demands. I had to extend help to cover as much as I could, by setting up businesses for the idle widows and helping them with their children’s education fees. As the year progressed, I co-opted the underprivileged children who could not afford to be trained at school by their poor
parents, but were left to hawk or become helps to people at a very tender school ages; gave them financial assistance to enable them go to school. In Oct., 2011, the process of formalising it became paramount due to the insurmountable requests that I receive from this group of which my savings alone could no longer carry. So the foundation became registered under the laws of Nigeria as Rock Foundation For Widows, Orphans And Less Privileged (ROFWOL) with four trustees. Three new trustees joined us this year, 2023.
Although evil communication can corrupt good manners; so also, good communication stimulates much more good deeds. It was my parents whom I saw helping the poor and the needy. My father built bungalows for some persons in his lifetime. He trained and sponsored many boys and men who passed through him in business apprenticeship. Secondly, was my husband who also has an unbeatable charitable lifestyle, and influenced me by rubbing-off of his philanthropic pedigree on me; a life that I would love to live again and again without regret.
So, my late father’s childhood experience was another motivational factor: he told me how he missed his secondary education admission into the pioneer and most prestigious secondary school, Dennis Memorial Grammar School, Onitsha in Anambra State, due to inability to raise his school fees which was 4kobo; even after a family friend asked him to re-take the exam the next year, he did and passed, but the fellow failed to keep his promise. This is why I am working hard to raise funds to support many children from poor homes who due to poverty could not attend formal education.
Therefore, situations like untimely death of one’s husband, father or mother could pose serious danger to the future and development of the individual. All fingers are not equal and so everybody must not be rich. But we are created to love and serve God and mankind. For that I am soliciting for your help to raise funds to train our children and support widows.
Thanks to the women organisation of my church: Our Saviour’s Church, TBS, Lagos; who by one of their charity donations and visit in 1999 to Makoko Motherless Babies’ Home, organised by Mothers Union, of which I was a participant, soon after, became a stimulant to my thirst to help the needy. Makoko motherless became the first beneficiary of our charitable works.
So, how have you been discharging your duty towards the poor and the needy? You can visit orphanages as well; or you donate to TRUST accounts of your churches and communities and other charitable organisations like ROFWOL; which will ensure the gifts reach the desired group of people.
THE BIRTH OF ROFWOL NONPROFIT
The registration of the charity foundation came as a need rather than a wish or desire after running it privately on my personal fund for TEN years. This was because I felt comfortable running it with my savings of which I was doing without complaint; because a substantial percentage of my earning was made available for this. I also added 50% of profit from sale of my books to ensure money is always available for me to do this job. Now it has become registered, I have not withdrawn my personal support nor reduced the amount instead I pray for God’s blessings so I keep increasing it.
As the number of people to help keeps increasing day by day, I found it very difficult to continue to do it all alone. First I ran to my husband for support, who I call, Co-Founder;
and he in deed has been very supportive till today. He also accepted to be our chairman. I cannot stop thanking God for a gift like him.
Hence, it has become very pertinent that other good citizens and people with heart of God like you should be called to partner with us so we can save a larger number of this ever increasing need.
I am very much aware that there are other charitable organisations doing much more good work already; so together with them, we may succeed in alleviating poverty and reducing illiteracy in children and youth in our country.
For the purposes of good citizenship and godliness; I have taken an unwavering decision to be very accountable with every kobo that is raised and ensure it is used for the needy and will as well keep an open door policy with transparency of which anyone willing to check things for him/herself is welcomed to do so. To achieve this, we engaged two staff to run the foundation professionally and manage the affairs so as to ensure that our books are properly kept.
